Courage Service Dogs

Welcome Home Labs has Partnered with Courage Service Dogs

Founded by Lisa Burkett in 2013, Courage Service Dogs is a non-profit organization dedicated to alleviate the symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) through the use of specially trained service dogs.  As a result of her own personal experiences with PTSD, Lisa acquired a service dog in 2010 to help her live a more productive life.  Her own remarkable experience with her service dog, Bella, has fueled her passion to help others who suffer from the debilitating effects of PTSD.

Although PTSD has been associated with veterans for many years, there is less attention paid to others who have been afflicted with PTSD as a result of their service to our communities. Law enforcement officers, fire fighters, and EMTs can also suffer from PTSD due to their involvement with and witnessing of traumatic situations throughout the course of their jobs.

PTSD is an extremely difficult disorder to treat through traditional methods.  Researchers are now discovering that PTSD typically results from a biochemical reaction that is triggered at the time of the trauma.  Because of this, PTSD cannot be cured and symptom management is currently the only available way to treat the disorder.  Furthermore, individuals with PTSD are hesitant to seek treatment because of the stigma associated with PTSD and other mental health disorders. This is especially true for those who are seen as courageous and heroic by our society.  While the adjective fits, it puts an undue burden on them to show their strength and resilience to tackle any situation, including PTSD as a result of their traumatic experiences.

While traditional therapies had helped some of the symptoms resulting from Lisa’s traumatic past, the PTSD she suffered was so severe that it interfered with every aspect of her life.  Having Bella has changed her life considerably.   Bella is specially trained to assist with symptoms using tasks such as blocking, alerting, waking her from nightmares and other tasks that help manage the effects of PTSD.

Although there are other service dog organizations in Minnesota, very few provide PTSD service dogs with no financial burden on the recipient.  Courage Service Dogs seeks to fill this gap by providing quality service dogs that are trained specifically to help manage the symptoms of PTSD.  A narrow focus, allows the organization to target funding sources that may not already be associated with other service dog organizations.  Such sources may include veteran’s organizations, medical institutions, mental health organizations, law enforcement communities and others who have a passion to help those diagnosed with PTSD.

Lisa is a licensed attorney and has over 15 years of accounting experience.  Furthermore she has founded and operated two successful businesses.  In addition she has worked as a tax preparer and has assisted others with starting businesses in Minnesota.  Her relevant experience is combined with other board members from the community with a broad range of skills and experiences, including dog training, finance, business ownership, non-profit work, mental health management and fundraising.

With a firm commitment to building a solid business base and a dedication to financial solvency, Courage Service Dogs seeks to provide quality service dogs to qualified recipients for many years to come.  The need is great and the passion to help Minnesota heroes exists.  By combining these elements, Courage Service dogs will fill an important role in helping our community and assisting those who deserve to free themselves of the harmful effects of PTSD.
